William Joseph Rudd (who goes by Joe) was shot in the head during an attempted robbery at a Travel Centers of America (TA) truck stop in London, Ohio on July 27, 2013, at approximately 4:30 AM. Rudd, who was 39 years old at the time and worked as a laser engineer at Fibertek in Herndon, Virginia, was passing through Ohio on his way back from visiting his parents in Iowa when the incident occurred.

According to Rudd's own account, he had stopped at the truck stop and was returning to his car when two teens approached him from behind. He initially walked past them while they were sitting down and they appeared harmless. As he was walking to his car, he felt something press against the back of his head. When he turned around, he realized it was a gun against his face. Without saying anything, one of the teens pulled the trigger, and the bullet struck Rudd's left jawbone.

The shooting left Rudd in serious condition, but he survived because his jaw stopped the bullet - reportedly just a half-inch from what could have been a fatal injury. After the shooting, he was taken to Grant Medical Center.

The perpetrators were identified as Devonere Simmonds (17) and Nathaniel Brunner (18), who were on a weeklong crime spree in Ohio. According to police reports, they wanted to steal Rudd's car. The teens were later found sleeping in Rudd's stolen car behind a home in Dayton.

Approximately a year after the incident, Rudd testified against both Simmonds and Brunner in court. Brunner was sentenced to life with parole eligibility in 78 years, while Simmonds received a sentence of life without parole plus 48 years for multiple offenses during his crime spree, including aggravated robbery, attempted murder, murder, and aggravated murder.
